India Surpasses Digital Literacy Goals with PMGDISHA: 6.39 Crore Individuals Trained

PMGDISHA
In a landmark achievement, the Government of India’s Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA) has successfully trained 6.39 crore individuals, exceeding its original target of 6 crore rural citizens. Launched with the vision to empower rural households with essential digital skills, PMGDISHA has played a pivotal role in bridging the digital divide across the country.

PMGDISHA: Empowering Rural India

PMGDISHA aimed to digitally empower one person per rural household by imparting essential digital literacy. This initiative has enabled individuals to effectively access government services, online payments, and other digital platforms, fostering inclusion in the digital economy.

As of March 31, 2024, the program concluded with 6.39 crore individuals trained, making it a monumental step in India’s journey toward becoming a digitally inclusive nation. States and Union Territories witnessed impressive participation, with training centers established nationwide, including the districts of Bhiwani and Mahendergarh in Haryana.

Initiatives for IT Skill Development

Beyond PMGDISHA, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched multiple initiatives to cement India’s position as the global leader in IT:

  1. India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS) & North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS):
    • Created job opportunities in small towns through financial incentives of up to ₹1 lakh per seat.
    • Promoted local entrepreneurship and inclusive hiring of women and persons with disabilities.
  2. FutureSkills PRIME:
    • A re-skilling/up-skilling program for emerging technologies such as AI, Blockchain, IoT, Cybersecurity, and more, in collaboration with NASSCOM.
  3. India AI Mission:
    • Offered India AI Fellowships to B.Tech and M.Tech students from AICTE-recognized engineering colleges.

Global Recognition in IT

India continues to lead in IT talent and innovation, securing a place in the top 4 of the Global and National AI Vibrancy Ranking alongside the US, UK, and China. The country’s strong focus on emerging technologies ensures that it remains a global hub for IT excellence.
PMGDISHA and other digital empowerment programs signify India’s unwavering commitment to making technology accessible to all. As digital literacy grows, rural citizens are now better equipped to harness the opportunities of a connected world.
